Every expense has a category, so you can see where your money goes.

## Built-in categories

Every account has these 14 categories: Education, Entertainment, Healthcare, Marketing, Meals, Office, Other, Personal, Professional, Shopping, Software, Transport, Travel and Utilities.

Built-in categories can't be renamed or deleted.

## Create your own categories

1. Open any category dropdown, or the category filter, and click **Manage Categories** at the bottom.
2. Enter a name of up to 30 characters, pick an emoji and a color.
3. Save it. It is available straight away.

You can create up to 10 custom categories in each workspace. Each one belongs to the workspace you create it in. Your account can have up to 10 for each workspace your plan allows: 10 on Starter and Pro, 30 on Scale.

## Edit or delete a category

Open **Manage Categories** to rename a category or change its emoji and color.

A category that is still used by expenses can't be deleted. Move those expenses to another category first, then delete it. Budgets for that category are deleted with it, and recurring expenses in it are filed under **Other** from then on.

## Automatic categories

Smart Scan, Quick Add and email forwarding pick the best match from your categories for each new expense, including the ones you create, or use **Other** when nothing fits. You can change the category of any expense at any time.
