# Fix a failed scan

> What to do when a receipt can't be read: retry, upload it again, or enter the details yourself.

Sometimes a receipt can't be read, for example when the photo is blurry, cut off or very dark. Its row in the scan card at the top of your dashboard then shows **Failed**.

## Your options

| Option | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Retry** | Scans the same file again. You can retry each receipt once |
| **Re-upload** | Replaces the file with a new one, such as a sharper photo |
| **Edit** | Lets you type in the details yourself |
| **Delete** | Removes the expense and its file |

On a phone, these options are in the **⋮** menu on the row. After the one retry, **Retry** is no longer offered (on a computer the row shows **Max retries reached**): upload the receipt again or enter the details yourself.

A retry and a re-upload each use one of your monthly scans. See [Files and scan limits](/docs/receipts/limits).

## Tips for a good scan

- Lay the receipt flat, in good light, and fill the frame with it.
- Make sure the total and the date are in the photo.
- Use one receipt per photo.
- For a long receipt, a PDF or a photo taken from a little further away works better than a crop.

## Closing the card with failed rows

If you close the scan card while some rows have failed, Traackly asks whether to **Keep & Close** or **Delete All Failed**. Kept rows stay in your expense list, where you can edit or delete them later.
